Ok Hee Ku was in many ways the pioneer of Korean
women's golf. She was the first Korean player to win on the LPGA
tour when she captured the 1988 Standard Turquoise Classic, a full
decade before Se Ri Pak's first win. She played regularly on the
LPGA tour for much of the late 80's and early 90's. As recently
as 2005, she was one of the top players on the Japanese tour.
She had 19 wins in Korea since 1980, 23 JLPGA wins
since 1985, and her lone LPGA win. She held the record for most
KLPGA wins in a season, five, until it was broken in 2007 by Ji
Yai Shin.
Ku was the first golfer inducted into the brand
new KLPGA Hall of Fame. Se Ri Pak joined her there in 2007. Ku served
as the President of the KLPGA in 2011 and 2012.
On July 10, 2013, Ku unexpectedly died from a heart
attack in Japan. She was 56 years old. Her memorial service was
attended by many of the Korean golfers who had followed her on the
world stage, including Grace Park, Mi Hyun Kim, Jiyai Shin and Soo
Yun Kang.
