Hee-Won and her Safeway trophy

Won the MVP award at the Pinx Cup.

Assessment:
Hee-Won Han put in a particularly hard off-season of work in preparation for the 2004 season. However, her results were not all that impressive to start with. In fact, it took her until May to nab her first top ten, at the Michelob Ultra Open. She finally started to pick up speed in midsummer, starting with a 6th place finish at the Evian Masters that vaulted her up the money list. She followed that with a solid 13th place at the British Open, then looked for all the world like she would successfully defend her title at the Wendy's Championship for children. With the lead going into the final nine holes, she made a few key mistakes while Catriona Matthew played well, and the result was a playoff which Han lost on the first playoff hole after missing a short par putt.

Still, Hee-Won was now hitting her typical stride. She followed that second place finish with a third at the Wachovia Classic, and after a couple of lesser performances, came back strong at the Safeway Classic. She managed to capture the lead in the second round, but faded a little after that. Still, with a few holes left to go on Sunday, she was only one shot out of the lead. From hole fifteen to the end, she played masterfully, eventually capturing the trophy in a playoff with Lorie Kane after a nearly perfect approach shot in the playoff. It was her third career win, and it got her back into the top ten on the money list.

Hee-Won would go on to grab three more top tens before the year ended. Her scoring average was a little worse than in 2003, and she made less money; as a result, she finished lower on the money list than in 2003. Still, it was a very solid second half for Han, and culminated in a great performance at the Pinx Cup, where she won both days and was awarded the MVP award as a result.

After a solid 2002 and a great 2003, this was a strong 2004. Not her best season, but nothing to be embarrassed about.

What she should work on:
She is still quite a bit behind most other top players in driving distance, and this continues to be one of her biggest weaknesses. Her irons are a bit inconsistent at times, but when they are on, they are on. As a result, she is consistently one of the better players in the league at hitting greens in regulation. Her short game continues to get better, and she is getting mentally tougher as well. Five - ten more yards distance off the tee would do wonders for her standing.

Final Grade:
B Summary:
2004 was a tiny step back from 2003, mostly thanks to a slow start to the year. She did not have quite as many good events as in 2003, her scoring was a tiny bit worse, and a few other stats were just a little bit off. Once she hit July, however, she was playing consistently strong golf most of the rest of the year. 8th place on the money list is still quite good, though, and she continues to be one of the top players on tour.
