Well, she didn't disappoint. While Annika struggled, going one over on
her first four holes, Han went one under, and caught and tied Sorenstam
at 7 under. At this point, no one else was even close, and it was increasingly
looking to be a two player race. And even better for Seoul Sisters fans,
it looked as though Hee-Won was going in the right direction while her
opponent was not. But then the rains came and play was suspended. They
were so severe that the round had to be postponed until Sunday. Han would
have to play nearly two complete rounds in a Major in one day. As if things
weren't hard enough for her already! And that was really it for Hee-Won, unfortunately. When she got back on Sunday, she was never able to recapture the magic she had shown the first three days. Her third round ended up being a lackluster 74 that gave Annika, who herself shot 72, a four shot lead. Hee-Won really struggled as the fourth round progressed, notching double bogeys and just in general not playing the game that had gotten her there. She ended up with a 5 over 76, and her first chance for a top ten in a Major fell by the wayside, as she finished 11th, just one shot out of a tie for 6th. |

Hee Won had a hard time on Sunday |
Still, 11th, as disappointing as the ending had been, was her best finish in a Major by quite a large margin. It was nearly her fourth consecutive top ten, and it matched well with the other finishes she had managed in that span (a 7th, 8th and 9th). She had survived more media attention than she had ever received before that, and did well; more than anything, it was the unfamiliarity of being in contention on Sunday, and the fact she had to play so much golf in one day for the first time, that doomed her efforts. But these are learning times for her, and if her arc continues upward, it will not be the last time she has a chance to raise one of the large trophies. |
