But Se Ri was left with an awkward distance to the flag, and tried hitting a soft 9 iron. The shot went well left into a patchy area. She was faced with a pitch back onto the green, with water and the bunker behind her, a nasty lie, and almost no way to get the ball close. She hit another wonderful shot, though, but even that put her 15 feet past the flag. She had to play it that way, though; the one thing she could not risk was losing the hole, which meant she had to give herself no worse than a bogey. Waugh got out of the bunker and had a six footer for bogey. But first, Se Ri had a chance to put it away with her par saver.

Happiness is a warm trophy! |
She had already made two near miraculous up and downs to stay in the match. And once again, she did what she had to do, dropping the putt perfectly as she crouched down, trying every bit of body English she could manage to force it into the hole. It had been an exhausting weekend: 46 holes of golf including leftover holes from Friday and four playoff holes. But in the end, she found the will to complete the job. Against a player who seemed to have destiny on her side, Se Ri responded time and again until at last the trophy was hers. And by completing the Hall of Fame Slam, she made one more step towards joining those ladies in that very same assembly. | |||||||||||||
