Friday: Fireworks! (continued)

Hole 11: Se Ri and Annika both were in the middle of the fairway, same distance. Today Davies hit driver and got 20 yards past them. Weirdly, though, Se Ri did not go for the green. She was in good position to do so, and Annika did go for it and made it. Perhaps Se Ri's bad experience on Thursday dissuaded her. Anyway, she was in the left rough, maybe 80 yards from the flag. Her pitch landed 12 feet from the flag, but Annika's eagle putt was actually closer. Se Ri just missed the birdie and settled for par, while Annika had a tap in birdie. The mob was enormous, and it was hard to see much.

Hole 12: Short par 3. Annika practically holed her tee shot, while Se Ri, although she landed on the green, was a good distance away with a tough putt. Another par for Se Ri, birdie for Annika.

Hole 13: Again Se Ri's drive found rough. She hit a low iron out that landed well short of the green, rolled up all the way to the flag then past and off the green. It looked like a great shot for a minute though. Now she had to hit a chip shot, and as has happened all tournament, when Se Ri needed to hit a chip shot she hit a terrible one. In this case, it rolled ten feet past the hole, and though her par save stopped inches away, it was still a bogey. That put her at +7.

Hole 14: Excellent fairway wood she hit to cut the corner on the dogleg. Se Ri Fighting! She was way down and hit an iron that looked all the way like it was going into the water, but instead landed tight to the hole on the green. Annika was in the fairway bunker and hit a terrible out into the trees. She ended up with a double bogey on the hole, her first real mistake all week, and threw her ball into the water in disgust. Se Ri, meanwhile, did everything but make the birdie. But for the first time all week, I saw the real Se Ri Pak. It was encouraging.

Hole 15: par 3, and Se Ri hit her tee shot up past the green, seemingly where Grace had been earlier. That meant, yes, another chip shot. And though she nearly sunk it, as usual it rolled a million miles past the hole, giving her another tough par save. Wonder of wonders, though, she sank it! So she stayed at +7.

Hole 16: Se Ri hit another perfect drive. Annika's drive went right, and her second stayed right; she went on to make bogey. Se Ri's approach was OK; it landed on the green, albeit on the wrong tier, which would make for a challenging two putt. Se Ri was a bit annoyed by this result. She had a tricky putt but left it just two feet away for a fairly easy par.

Hole 17: Pretty good tee shot, right side of fairway. Then she hit an unbelievably good approach to this tricky green, leaving herself a six footer. And for once, she cashed in, making the birdie and moving back to even for the day. Everything about her demeanor just seemed different from yesterday. She had that swagger, that confidence in her eyes. For once I was looking forward to each hole, to see what she could come up with next.

Hole 18: Gorgeous, long drive, this was one of the longest I saw all week, about where Grace was yesterday (in the 280 range). Her second shot was a great approach that ended up in that nasty collection area on the left. From where I stood, I couldn't tell if she putted or chipped from there, although it didn't get much air. Anyway, it went well past the hole, and she took her par and moved on.

So she did what she needed to do on the front side, playing even par golf and in general minimizing her mistakes. But if she wanted to be sure to make the cut, a few more birdies couldn't have hurt, although +6 was probably going to be good enough by my reckoning.

Hole 1: Davies hit driver and smoked it well past Se Ri, who hit 3 wood. But Se Ri's drive was still perfect, and she hit a sensational approach to ten feet which again stopped dead on landing. Best of all, though, she was putting a pretty straight putt, and she drained it to move to +5.

Hole 2: Par 3. The flag today was over near the bunker, and she nearly carried it but landed her tee shot in the bunker. She had no green to work with, so she had to hit a very high shot and hope for the best. Well, she hit it nice and high, but it looked like it was going to fly well past the flag, when it hit the top of the flag and dropped straight down, leaving her a one footer for par. Se Ri cracked up on that one. Hey, just like she planned it!

Se Ri finally had something to smile about!

Hole 3: Se Ri had struggled to get par on this hole yesterday. Her drive here was not terrible, but still missed the fairway. Her approach landed short of the green in some rough. This meant she had to chip, but her chip was actually not so terrible, leaving her a five footer for par. But she didn't convert and fell back to +6.

Hole 4: (par 5). Both Annika and Davies went left, but Se Ri again was straight. Se Ri got upset by her second shot, but she still made the green, although she was on the wrong tier to make an eagle. She negotiated the eagle putt nicely to two feet for an easy birdie. I guess she has really high standards! Back to +5.

Hole 5: (par 3 over water). Her tee shot was about 20 feet past the hole, and her birdie stopped about a foot short. Easy par.

Hole 6: Another great drive, about 15 yards ahead of Annika. She had no danger in the way for her second shot, and hit a good iron to about 8 feet. Couldn't make that one, though, and had a tap in par. Annika, like she had done with sister hole #14, put her approach in trouble, in this case the water. But she hit a ten foot bogey save putt, so she didn't have to throw this ball into the water.
