Hee Won Has Won!
Congratulations to Hee-Won Han, the 2001 LPGA Rookie of the Year and 1998
JLPGA Rookie of the Year, who has added another feather to her cap by
winning the prestigious Sybase Big Apple Classic in New York City. This
is her first ever tour victory, meaning she now qualifies for the new
Rolex watch. It's especially sweet for her, being as how it was at this
very event last year where she had her best chance to win, but came up
just inches short and ended up losing in a playoff to fellow Korean Gloria
Park. Meg Mallon, the great American player who finished runner up to
Hee-Won, said of her, "She will do well (in the future) judging by
the her character in coming back from last year and the determination
to win this tournament." The win moves her to 12th on the money list.

An excerpt from Se Ri's Golf Digest article
|
Se Ri in the news
Se Ri Pak can be found in two magazines now on your newsstands. The August
issue of Golf Digest features a nice article about Se Ri's swing. Included
is a detailed examination of her swing from three different angles, and
information about what she is currently working on. If you ever wanted
insight into the magic, pick this issue up now!
Also, the LPGA's annual, T Magazine, has finally arrived on newsstands,
and it features an article about the Major winners from 2002. Prominently
featured in that list is Se Ri, with several photos of her LPGA Championship
victory, including the photo that opens the article.
And there are a couple of newly released cards in the Upper Deck First
Ladies golf card series featuring Se Ri. One has her autograph, and is
in such limited supply that it is already selling on E-Bay for upwards
of $50. If I ever receive an inheritance from some forgotten relative,
I'll be sure to pick one up!
Lastly, for those who haven't seen it, check this out! Se Ri Pak supplied
a diary to the USGA during the US Women's Open. Her entries can be found
here. An interesting insight into her thinking during this tough tournament.

Grace Park tidbit
I picked this up on a Korean website. If anyone can give me further insight
into this picture, I'd appreciate it. The article seemed to say that Grace
had been chosen to represent Korea (along with the male athlete shown,
whom I believe is one of the Korean baseball players currently playing
in the Major Leagues) in ads celebrating the Korean spirit. Or maybe she's
just trying to show she's washed her hands so she can eat? Whatever's
going on, here's the picture!

Sunny made the cut!
This might not seem like much to the unaware, but Sunny Lee has finally
made her first LPGA cut. She came into this league in 2002 with aspirations
of becoming another breakout Korean star. This wouldn't have been so far
fetched, considering she had won multiple times on the KLPGA. But Sunny,
despite being exempt, was never able to get rolling in 2002, and despite
repeated efforts, was unable to make a single cut. This year she is nonexempt,
and in fact has not played in an LPGA event until this week, where she finally
broke that jinx. For a while it looked like she would make it by several
shots, but she struggled coming in and ended up just making the cut in the
end. She went on to finish dead last in the field, but hopefully the mere
fact she made some money will spur her on to keep trying. She is obviously
talented, and hopefully will show everyone a thing or two as she keeps developing. |

Money List
Grace has been on a tear lately, notching top tens in all three recent
events. She managed to edge out Se Ri in Vancouver to extend her lead
on the money list, then got another third place when Se Ri was idle at
the Sybase Big Apple Classic. Hee-Won Han made a big leap thanks to her
win at New Rochelle, and Jeong Jang's showing in the Open, despite her
final day 8, helped her as well. Meanwhile, Sunny Lee made her first ever
LPGA cut, although she finished dead last and will probably not be showing
up on this list for a while! Still, congratulations to her!
